Stephen Jackson Claps Back After "Tasteless" George Floyd Joke
Stephen Jackson isn't staying quiet after a joke about his late friend George Floyd made its way into the Netflix special "The Roast of Kevin Hart." The former NBA champion took to social media to address the fallout from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s set, making it clear that he isn’t here for the "it's just a joke" defense.
In a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday, May 13, Jackson kept it real about how perspective changes when the tragedy is personal. He noted that people can’t dictate what others should or shouldn’t find offensive, especially when it involves the loss of a loved one. He pointed out that while people might laugh when it’s someone else’s family, that humor disappears once a similar situation "comes to your doorstep."
The joke also caught the attention of The Gianna & George Floyd Foundation. Spokesperson Travis Cains told TMZ that the moment was a setback for the community. Cains mentioned that the foundation is focused on rebuilding and staying positive, rather than dealing with "tasteless" commentary from white comedians.
This isn't the first time Hinchcliffe has brought up Floyd’s name for a laugh; he reportedly made a similar reference during a roast for Tom Brady two years ago. Sources close to Floyd’s family shared that they are disgusted by what they see as a weird obsession with making light of a murder that sparked global protests.
Jackson’s response highlights a growing frustration with where the line is drawn in comedy, particularly when it comes to Black trauma. For him, this wasn't about being "too sensitive"—it was about defending the memory of a childhood friend whose death changed the world.
