Black Excellence On The Sidelines: Jerry Rice, DeSean Jackson And Michael Vick Are Coaching The NFL’s Best At 2026 Pro Bowl

The NFL is bringing back some of the game’s most exciting players from the past as it looks to renew interest in the Pro Bowl festivities.

The 2026 Pro Bowl Games officially kick off today and the league is bringing some of its legends back to the party.

Former San Francisco 49ers icon Jerry Rice will lead the AFC squad, backed by former NFL receiver and current Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson as offensive coordinator. On the AFC side, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young will be joined by former Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and current Norfolk State head coach Michael Vick as offensive coordinator. The inclusion of former players who now lead HBCU programs  brings a spotlight to Black leadership within the coaching ranks in an offseason where a high number of NFL head coaching vacancies has so far yielded no Black hires.

The Pro Bowl’s initial rosters, revealed in late December, were dominated by the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and Seattle Seahawks, who each secured six selections. The Los Angeles Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and Philadelphia Eagles followed closely with five selections each. However, the final lineups have seen several adjustments due to injuries and Super Bowl participation.

Notably, Cleveland Browns standout Shedeur Sanders joins the AFC quarterback room, replacing the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen. On the NFC side, Jalen Hurts and Jared Goff have stepped in to lead the offense.

The Pro Bowl flag football game is scheduled to air Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN and Disney XD.
