NFL DNA, World Cup Stage: Meet USMNT Lockdown Defender Alex Freeman

Get to know the young star carving out his own unique legacy on soccer's biggest global stage.

United States Men's National Team defender Alex Freeman is holding things down on the pitch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but his athletic foundation was built years ago at home in South Florida. Born into a family where sports were just a part of everyday life, the rising soccer star credits a unique, blended dynamic with giving him the ultimate foundation to reach the sport's biggest stage.

Freeman was born in 2004 to former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman and Rochelle Hinkle. Shortly after his birth, his parents split; his mother married Jake Hinkle, while his father built a family with Mekevia Hawkins. Instead of letting the split create distance, the parents and stepparents worked together to establish a tight-knit environment for Alex and his younger brothers, Tyler Hinkle and Josh Hinkle, as well as stepsister Diamond Spaulding, a former Texas A&M University track and field athlete.

The soccer standout told ESPN that the harmony between his father and stepfather gave him the stability he needed to thrive.

Growing up as the son of an NFL veteran meant facing constant questions about entering football. Antonio Freeman spent most of his professional career with the Packers, winning Super Bowl XXXI and earning a Pro Bowl nod in 1998. While his father hoped to pass down a passion for the gridiron, Alex Freeman found a love for soccer at age 4, introduced to the game by his mother and his stepfather, a dedicated Manchester United fan who also served as his first coach.

The elder Freeman admitted he was initially skeptical about the sport, telling ESPN about the historical lack of representation for Black men in American soccer. However, his son's dedication changed his perspective, and the former wide receiver became a major source of advice on discipline and what it takes to perform at the highest level of professional football.

Following Thursday's matches, the United States locked in Bosnia and Herzegovina as its Round of 32 opponent. Bosnia secured third place in Group B after defeating Qatar 3-1, creating a path to face the U.S. squad, which won Group D. The single-elimination match is scheduled for July 1 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
