Aces Win Game 3 With A’ja Wilson’s Last-Second Shot

The MVP came up big in the final minutes, allowing Las Vegas to secure a pivotal win.

The Las Vegas Aces survived a fourth-quarter rally from the Phoenix Mercury to claim a thrilling 90-88 victory in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals, taking a commanding 3-0 series lead. The win puts the Aces just one victory away from their third championship in four years.

Although it was a close game, Jewell Loyd's three-point shooting allowed the Aces to build a 17-point lead heading into the final period.

Then A’ja Wilson showed why she is the MVP of the league.

After catching an inbounds pass with around five seconds left in regulation and the game tied 86-86, Wilson hit a turnaround jumper over DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas for the game-winner.

"I mean, under Becky [Hammon], we've never won a Game 3. This was a must-win for us," Wilson said after the game. "Just for that sake. I feel like my biggest mentality and the thing that I relayed to my teammates is like, we just need to win one ... win possessions, win the quarters, and then everything else will pan out."

The play worked out just as Aces' head coach drew it up.

"Get the ball to A'ja, and get out of the way," Hammon laughed.

Wilson finished with 34 points and 14 rebounds, making it her fifth career 30-point double-double in the playoffs. Jackie Young added 21 points and nine assists, continuing her stellar play.

Wilson expressed her gratitude to Hammon for putting the ball in her hands in the most crucial moments.

"I appreciate Becky trusting me in those moments," Wilson said. "But those are just playoff basketball moments. Those are moments that you live for..... I'm glad I was able to come to work."

She continued: "It's the Finals. ... These are the times that you see on TV. You're watching on TV and you're like, 'Oh my god, to be in that building,' and it's truly powerful."

Game 4 will take place in Phoenix on Friday (October 10), where the Aces will look to close out the series.
