HBCU Athlete Charged With Killing Teammate Boyfriend
An HBCU track and field athlete is dead, and his girlfriend is charged with his murder.
Kevaughn Goldson, 23, was a sprinter for Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., who police say was in a relationship with fellow runner Denita Jackson. On Monday, a fight broke out that led to Goldson’s death and has Jackson facing homicide charges.
Local ABC-affiliate KMIZ reported that the relationship between the two had been tumultuous, with a history of domestic incidents. In the latest, Jackson left work and returned home to find Goldson on a bed, fully clothed, talking with her roommate. The pair had argued over a bottle of cologne, which was also on the bed.
Jackson then jumped on the bed, starting the fight, according to KMIZ’s reporting of police accounts. The couple ended up on the floor, where Jackson alleged Goldson choked her, and she told cops she reached for a knife under the bed and stabbed him.
After Jackson called 911, Goldson was first transported to a local emergency room, then flown by helicopter to a larger hospital for surgery, where he died.
Jackson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, TMZ reported. She is being held without bond. KMIZ reported on Thursday that, while she’s scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, she’s now the subject of an immigration hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency commonly known as ICE. Jackson is originally from Guyana, while Goldson is from Jamaica.
Lincoln University released a statement on the incident that read, ”Our thoughts are with family, friends, faculty, staff, and all who have been impacted by this tragic situation. The well-being of our University community is our greatest priority. Students and employees are reminded of counseling and other support services for those who need them.”
