Will Arrest Tank This Star Receiver’s Draft Stock?
Zachariah Branch, a top wide receiver prospect entering this week’s NFL Draft, was arrested early Sunday morning in Athens, Georgia. The 22-year-old stands accused of two misdemeanor charges, including obstruction of a law enforcement officer and obstructing public sidewalks or streets.
According to the Athens-Clarke County arrest log, the former Georgia standout was booked at 1:26 a.m. and released shortly after at 3:44 a.m. upon posting a $39 bond. The incident occurred while the athlete was in town to attend the Bulldogs' spring game on Saturday.
Details from the police report, obtained by NFL Network, allege that an officer repeatedly instructed the prospect to move from a sidewalk where he was reportedly blocking the flow of foot traffic and business access. The report claims that despite multiple verbal commands and a warning of a citation, the athlete failed to comply. The officer noted that the player smirked and made only a slight movement while remaining on the sidewalk, leading to his arrest for misdemeanor obstruction.
This legal hurdle comes at a critical time for the wideout. The NFL Draft kicks off this Thursday, and the former Trojan-turned-Bulldog is widely projected as a Day 2 selection. Known for his elite speed, he clocked a blistering 4.35-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and is ranked among the top 100 available players by multiple major draft analysts.
Last season, the playmaker made a massive impact in Athens after transferring from USC with his twin brother, Zion. He etched his name into the school record books by setting Georgia’s single-season record with 81 receptions, totaling 811 yards and six touchdowns.
While the draft class is considered deep at the receiver position, the former Georgia star remains a highly sought-after talent whose stock will be closely monitored by front offices following this weekend’s events.
