Malcolm Brogdon Announces Retirement Just Before Start of NBA Season
Malcolm Brogdon has announced his retirement from the NBA after nine years.
“Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” Brogdon told ESPN in a statement. “I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.”
“I am deeply grateful to have arrived at this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends,” his statement continued. “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”
Brogdon signed with the New York Knicks on September 12, 2025, agreeing to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal. The Knicks congratulated Brogdon on his retirement on social media.
“Congrats on your retirement, Malcolm,” the Knicks post read. “Best of luck in your next chapter.”
Drafted in the second-round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016, Brogdon won the Kia Rookie of the Year award in 2017. He went on to play for the Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, and the Washington Wizards. Brogdon was slated to be on the Knicks opening night roster.
Brogdon won the Kia Sixth Man of the Year award in 2022-23 while playing for the Celtics. He is one of just two players in NBA history to win both Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year.
Throughout his career, Brogdon suffered from numerous injuries but was an extremely productive player when healthy.
In 436 career games over nine seasons, Brogdon averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 29.1 minutes per game.
