Two Dead in Nigeria Highway Collision Involving Boxer Anthony Joshua
Just a week after defeating Jake Paul in a Netflix boxing match, on Monday (Dec. 29), two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was injured in a fatal car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria. Local authorities confirmed that two people were killed in the collision, which occurred just days after Joshua’s knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.
The accident took place at approximately 11 a.m. local time on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Makun area. According to Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo, the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was a passenger suffered a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle subsequently collided with a stationary truck parked along the highway.
The Ogun State Police Command said Paul was seated in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the crash. While two other passengers in the SUV died at the scene, Joshua sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Police officials stated that the 36-year-old boxer is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released.
Paul’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, told the Daily Mail, “We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don't want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears okay from what I have seen in the images.”
The Ogun State Police Command extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assures the public that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has commenced.
