Russell Wilson Rips Sean Payton On Social Media
Russell Wilson fired back at Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton for making comments about him.
On Sunday, the Broncos pulled off an amazing comeback win, 33-32, over the New York Giants. Jaxson Dart, who replaced Wilson as the Giants' starting quarterback, led New York to a 26-8 advantage, but Denver scored all 33 of its points in the fourth quarter for the improbable victory.
After the game, Payton lauded Dart’s play, and he also took a shot at Wilson he coached in 2023.
"I have a ton of respect for [the Giants] organization," Payton said. "I spent four of my early years there coordinating a Super Bowl, the first game in this stadium before 9/11, close with the Mara and Tisch family.
"You know, they found a little spark with that quarterback," Payton said postgame Sunday.. "I was talking to [Giants owner] John Mara not too long ago, and I said, 'We were hoping that that change would have happened long after our game.' "
The usually reserved Wilson took some time to respond to Payton’s remarks.
"Classless … but not surprised," Wilson wrote. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later, through the media."
Wilson’s response with the "bounty hunting" dig at Payton referred to the infamous scandal during Payton's tenure with the New Orleans Saints. He was alleged to have instituted a cash-for-hits bounty program that was run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
In 2022, Wilson was traded by the Seattle Seahawks to the Broncos 2022, but was benched by Payton in 2023 and eventually released in the 2024 offseason despite $85 million in dead money. The relationship between the coach and the quarterback seems to have gotten worse.
For his involvement in the scandal, Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season without pay as a result.
