Tristan Thompson Steps Up For His Brother’s Future

The veteran forward is seeking a limited conservatorship to manage his brother Amari’s 24-hour medical needs.

Tristan Thompson filed for a limited conservatorship for his younger brother, Amari, on Monday, April 27. According to court documents obtained by People magazine, the petition seeks to formalize the long-term care of the 19-year-old, who faces significant medical and developmental challenges that prevent him from living independently.

The legal filing, submitted in Los Angeles, states that the younger Thompson brother relies entirely on the professional basketball player for his daily needs and is unable to manage financial transactions. Amari lives with an intellectual disability and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that requires around-the-clock assistance.

This move follows a 2024 ruling granting Thompson legal guardianship of his brother while the brother was still a minor. That transition took place after the sudden death of their mother, Andrea Thompson, in 2023. In previous court documents, he noted that he is the closest living relative capable of providing support, as their father has been absent from Amari’s life for over a decade.

The 35-year-old athlete has often credited his support system for helping manage his brother's care, especially given his demanding travel schedule with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In a statement previously shared with People, he expressed deep gratitude for the caregivers who have assisted him since his mother’s passing, describing them as essential to his brother's well-being.

Because Amari has reached the age of 18, a limited conservatorship is the legal standard in California to ensure a designated person can continue to make critical decisions regarding medical care, residence, and financial matters for a developmentally disabled adult. The filing indicates that Amari does not object to the arrangement or the appointment of his brother as conservator.
