OKC's Twin Towers Shutdown Wemby To Steal Game 5
Oklahoma City had some questions to answer after a rough Game 4, and they answered them right out of the gate on Tuesday. The Thunder completely transformed their offense, matching their entire Game 4 scoring output by halftime, and walked away with a 127-114 win over the San Antonio Spurs. With that victory, Oklahoma City now holds a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Finals and sits just one win away from a trip to the NBA Finals.
The history books are heavily on their side now, too. Teams that take Game 5 in a tied series go on to advance nearly 82% of the time.
It wasn't an easy start for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The star guard opened the night shooting 1-for-6 with four turnovers, but he stayed patient, relied on his mid-range jumper, and started living at the free-throw line. He ended up finishing the night with 32 points and nine assists, proving exactly why he is so tough to guard when the game slows down.
Inside the paint, the Thunder's big men made life incredibly difficult for Victor Wembanyama. Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein teamed up to bring the physicality, combining for 28 points and 26 rebounds. Holmgren set the tone early with 16 points and 11 boards, while Hartenstein chipped in 12 points and 15 rebounds, including some massive second-chance opportunities on the offensive glass. Together, they held Wembanyama to a tough 4-for-15 shooting night and a series-low eight points in the paint.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault also had to shuffle his deck with Jalen Williams sidelined by a hamstring injury. He chose to start rookie Jared McCain, and the youngster delivered. McCain scored 20 points, with 18 of those coming in a massive second-half performance. Oklahoma City also got a huge boost from veteran Alex Caruso, who poured in 22 points, six assists, and three steals off the bench.
The Spurs didn't just roll over, though. Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 24 points, and Julian Champagnie knocked down shots early to finish with 22. The Spurs cut a 20-point deficit to 8 late in the third quarter, and they were within 9 halfway through the fourth. But Oklahoma City responded with an 11-4 run to put the game on ice.
The series now heads back to San Antonio on Thursday night, where the Thunder will try to close things out and punch their ticket to the Finals.
