Reinforcements on the Way for Patrick Mahomes: Eric Bieniemy Returns to Chiefs as OC
The Kansas City Chiefs are turning to a familiar face to help steady the ship after a rocky 2025 campaign. Eric Bieniemy is set to return to the franchise as offensive coordinator, stepping back into the role he held during the team’s most dominant years. The news comes as the contract for current offensive coordinator Matt Nagy expires at the conclusion of this season, with Nagy emerging as a top candidate for several head coaching vacancies, including the Tennessee Titans.
The reunion, reported Monday by NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, marks a homecoming for a coach who has been deeply woven into the Chiefs' success under head coach Andy Reid. Bieniemy first joined the staff in Kansas City in 2013 as a running backs coach, a position he held for five seasons before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018. His elevation coincided with the rise of Patrick Mahomes, and together they led an offense that never finished lower than sixth in the league in scoring. During that five-year stretch, the Chiefs secured two Super Bowl titles and appeared in three Super Bowls.
Since leaving Kansas City after the 2022 season, Bieniemy has taken on a variety of roles to broaden his coaching resume. He served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023, followed by a stint in the collegiate ranks as an associate head coach at UCLA in 2024. Most recently, he spent the 2025 season as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears under head coach Ben Johnson, where he helped lead one of the most productive rushing attacks in the NFL.
His return to Missouri comes at a critical juncture for the franchise. The Chiefs are coming off a difficult 6-11 season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The offensive unit struggled with consistency, and the team faced a major setback when Mahomes suffered a season-ending ACL and LCL tear in December. As Mahomes begins his rehabilitation process, the organization is banking on Bieniemy’s familiarity with the system and his reputation for demanding accountability to revitalize the offense.
While the Chiefs must still finalize the formal interview process, the move is widely seen as a strategic reset. With questions lingering about the future of veteran players like Travis Kelce and the timeline for Mahomes’ return, bringing Bieniemy back provides a sense of continuity and a proven track record of high-level production.
