Golden State GM Remains Tight-Lipped Following Flau’jae Johnson Draft-Night Trade

Fans are left searching for clarity as the team’s leadership remains guarded about the strategy that moved a 2023 national champion.

The Golden State Valkyries’ draft night took an unexpected turn that left the room in disbelief. After selecting former LSU standout Flau’jae Johnson with the No. 8 overall pick, the expansion franchise traded the 2023 national champion to the Seattle Storm less than an hour later.

Valkyries General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin told ESPN the deal was actually set in motion before the pick was even submitted. In exchange for Johnson, Golden State received a 2028 second-round selection and the draft rights to Marta Suarez, who was taken by Seattle at No. 16.

Following the event, Nyanin was asked to elaborate on the strategy behind moving such a high-profile talent so quickly. She remained guarded, noting that she wanted to be thoughtful in her response regarding how players fit the squad’s specific needs. When questioned if the decision was tied to salary cap management, the general manager declined to comment, stating she does not discuss financial or cap-related details.

Seattle General Manager Talisa Rhea took a different tone, expressing excitement over the acquisition. Rhea noted that the Storm had been actively looking for a chance to move up the board and didn't anticipate a player of Johnson's caliber being available at that stage. The Storm view the former Tiger as a foundational piece for their future.

Johnson enters the professional ranks following a stellar career at LSU, where she climbed the school's all-time leaderboards in both scoring and total victories. While the Valkyries continue to shape their identity following a historic debut season in 2025, the choice to move on from a high-profile talent like Johnson has become a major talking point for the 2026 campaign.
