Here's Who Inspired Bam Adebayo’s 83-Point Night
The 83-point outburst moved Bam Adebayo past Kobe Bryant for the second-most points ever scored in a single NBA game, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point record. But that wasn't the only record book where Adebayo landed in second place on Tuesday; as he's half of a pair with the WNBA's A'ja Wilson, who currently holds the record for the highest single-game scoring performance in WNBA history with 53 points.
Adebayo’s scoring clinic included 20 field goals and a league-record 36 free throws. After scoring 31 points in the opening frame and 43 by the half, the Heat star admitted that sharing the milestone with Wilson made the achievement more significant.
"To have 83 the first game she's here is very special," Adebayo said during a joint post-game press conference. "The behind-the-scenes, the workouts, the conversations, they're very motivating, and obviously you see what she does... you get inspired by that. I'm thankful to have her in my life."
Wilson, a four-time WNBA MVP, stood by Adebayo as he addressed the media, offering insight into the discipline required to reach such a historic mark. She noted that while the world sees the final box score, she witnesses the internal drive that fuels his game.
"I see the countless hours, the early morning workouts, the questioning the self, I see all that," Wilson said. "This has been an incredible journey for Bam... I know he says I'm his inspiration, but I don't think he has a clue how much he inspires me."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said it was "surreal" watching Adebayo etch his name between Chamberlain and Bryant in the record books.
Adebayo finished the night shooting 20 of 43 from the floor and 7 of 22 from beyond the arc.
