Tracy McGrady Addresses Backlash From Kobe Bryant Comments
Tracy McGrady is clarifying statements that some took issue with, mainly comments about Kobe Bryant.
During a recent appearance on “Gil’s Arena”, McGrady reflected on his career and how it would have been different if he had played with Shaquille O’Neal.
“When I look at who I was as a player at this time and I’m looking at Shaq, the most dominant basketball player … hell yeah, I would have won a ring with the Big Fella,” McGrady said.
The Hall of Famer also referenced Dwyane Wade, who won a championship with O’Neal in 2006.
“I’m not saying I’m Kobe. I don’t have to be Kobe to play with Shaq and win a championship,” McGrady argued. “D-Wade proved that, didn’t he?”
As a peer and one of Bryant's biggest fans, McGrady made it clear that he meant no disrespect with his remarks.
“So, I’m looking at Shaq and you got to think San Antonio and the Lakers won all the f**king championships at that time,” McGrady said. “Like, nobody else was winning. So when I said it, and here’s what I do want to say. Ain’t nobody replacing Kobe Bryant, right? Nobody’s replacing Kobe.”
“And people forget that I’m one of the biggest advocates out here defending when Kobe is disrespected,” McGrady added. “And if anybody took disrespect to what I said, it’s on you, right? I didn’t mean it; wasn’t no disrespect to my brother Bean. Top five wherever y’all have him. For me, he’s one of the greatest, and I put him in that top five all time.”
On a previous episode of “Gil’s Arena,” former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas commented that McGrady was actually a better player than Bryant during his prime years in the early 2000s.
“You guys weren't there...if he took Orlando; T-Mac that averaged 32 and you replace him with Kobe, he's the same person," Arenas explained.
"In that era, for about two, three years, where everybody was saying they didn't know who was better," Ron Artest added.
