'Pinch-Me Moment': Cam Newton Emotional During Return to Charlotte for Panthers Playoff Game
It took several years, and a resurgence of "Cardiac Cats" magic, but the "Superman" of Carolina finally returned to his home turf. Cam Newton, the former league MVP and the face of the Carolina Panthers franchise for nearly a decade, made a triumphant return to Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 10.
The appearance marked the first time Newton has been back in the stadium in an official capacity since the team secured a home playoff berth—the organization's first in ten years.
The Panthers honored the quarterback as their “Legend of the Game” ahead of the wild-card matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Minutes before kickoff, the stadium lights dimmed, and Newton emerged from the tunnel amid a cloud of smoke and a deafening roar from the sold-out crowd. Clad in his signature style, Newton walked to the "Keep Pounding" drum, a symbol of the team’s resilience, and struck it four times. The gesture, which has become a pregame tradition in Charlotte, was met with a sustained standing ovation that echoed throughout the uptown district.
Before taking the field, Newton spent his morning engaging with the community that helped define his career. He recorded a live episode of his 4th & 1 podcast at a fan tailgate event, where hundreds of supporters lined up hours in advance to catch a glimpse of the veteran playmaker.
Addressing the crowd during the live recording, Newton spoke candidly about the emotional weight of the day and his enduring bond with the city. “I’m overwhelmed with passion, joy,” Newton told the fans. “It’s an honor to be able to have given this city half of what you guys have given me.” The return offered a moment of reflection for the quarterback, who led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015.
“This is a pinch-me moment,” he said. “For the first time in my life, this is me experiencing a Panthers game without being a member of the Panthers.”
