Fred VanVleet Suffers ACL Tear, Could Miss Entire 2025-26 Season

After making several offseason moves, the Rockets will now have to contend in the Western Conference without VanVleet for the majority of the season.

Fred VanVleet, starting point guard of the Houston Rockets, has suffered a torn ACL and could miss the entirety of the 2025-26 season.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the devastating injury occurred during an offseason workout.

Kelly Iko, NBA reporter at Yahoo Sports!,  reported that VanVleet is scheduled for surgery this week.

In June,  VanVleet signed a two-year, $50 million extension with the Rockets, which included a player option in 2026-27, solidifying him as one of the cornerstones of the franchise.

Last season, VanVleet averaged 14.1 points in his fewest in a season since 2018-19, but in the playoffs, he averaged 18.7 points per game.

With news of VanVleet’s injury, doubt has been cast over the Rockets after they bolstered their roster with several moves in the offseason. In a blockbuster trade, the Rockets acquired superstar forward Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns and signed Jabari Smith Jr. to a massive contract extension. Also, they signed free agents Dorian Finney-Smith, Clint Capela, and Josh Okogie.

After going undrafted in 2016, VanVleet signed with the Toronto Raptors and their G League affiliate, Raptors 905, leading them to the  D-League championship in 2017. As the starting point guard for the Raptors, he won an NBA championship in 2019 and was named an NBA All-Star in 2022.

In July  2023, he agreed to a three-year, $130 million contract in free agency with the Rockets.
