Suns Trade Kevin Durant To Houston Rockets

With the addition of Durant, the Rockets are now one of the favorites to come out of the Western Conference next season.

Kevin Durant is now a Houston Rocket.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Sunday (June 22) that the Phoenix Suns have agreed to send Durant in a blockbuster trade to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the draft, and five second-round picks.

The deal can be formally completed on July 6, when the league’s new year begins.

When news of the trade broke, the odds for the Rockets to win the NBA title next season moved from 18-1 to +850 at ESPN BET, placing them behind the Oklahoma City Thunder (+220).

The Rockets, along with the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat, were Durant’s preferred destinations. Reportedly, Miami  “turned down the opportunity to place Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jovic, Haywood Highsmith, the No. 20 pick, and other draft assets in a deal."

With Duran in tow, All-Star center Alperen Sengun, rising star Amen Thompson, and with the steady play of Fred VanVleet, the Rockets are poised to be among the top contenders in the Western Conference. The Rockets won 52 games under coach Ime Udoka this season.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Scoop B Radio noted that the Rockets have had interest in Durant since last season.

“Houston went big-game hunting and landed the ultimate scoring weapon. From Slim Reaper to H-Town Heatseeker. Let’s be clear: this is a culture shift. Ime Udoka and Rafael Stone aren’t playing checkers; they’re playing chess with championship pieces. KD brings championship pedigree, elite shot creation, and a mentality that will demand winning habits from a young but talented core,” Robinson told BET.com

“Ime and KD share a bond from their Brooklyn Nets days, and Fred VanVleet’s veteran savvy fits nicely with Durant’s cerebral approach. People questioned the Rockets’ direction, but this was always the quiet plan. Build a foundation, then go star shopping when the market shifts," he continued.

While on stage at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Sunday, Durant received the news during a live interview.

"You're headed to Houston. How does that sound?" Rooks asked as the crowd screamed.

"We're gonna see man, we're gonna see," Durant said while smiling with satisfaction.

Following the panel, Durant told commentator Kay Adams that he is "looking forward" to joining the Rockets.

"Crazy, crazy last couple weeks, but I'm glad it's over with," Durant said, before admitting that the trade wasn't a total surprise. "I had an idea, but I didn't know exactly when it was gonna happen. I'm glad we kind of did this onstage, it worked out."

Regarded as one of the most elite scorers of all time at 37, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 62 games this season. He also averaged at least 25 points, 50% field goal shooting, and 40% on 3-pointers in three straight seasons, the longest streak ever in the NBA.
