Why The Howard Vs. Morehouse Rivalry Is Returning to D.C. After 30 Years
For one weekend in October, Washington, D.C., will be the center of the HBCU universe. Alumni from Howard University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College are all expected to descend on the nation’s capital for a massive reunion of three of the country's most influential institutions.
The gathering is part of Howard’s 2026 Homecoming celebration, which will see the Bison host Morehouse's Maroon Tigers in a matchup deeper than just a football game. It will mark the first time that the two programs, representing HBCUs with big and influential alumni populations, meet in a Homecoming in nearly 30 years.
The weekend is expected to draw thousands of people from all over, turning Howard’s campus into one of the biggest HBCU gatherings of the year. For most of the people pulling up, the game is really just the centerpiece of a much larger celebration of culture and Black excellence.
The matchup is set for Oct. 17, 2026, at William H. Greene Stadium. You have to go all the way back to Oct. 18, 1997, to find the last time these two met for Homecoming on the Yard.
For most of the last three decades, this rivalry has been a traveling spectacle. We’ve seen it at RFK Stadium and more recently at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as the headliner for the HBCU New York Classic. Those neutral-site games were huge, often bringing in more than 35,000 fans and giving the rivalry a national stage.
But moving to professional stadiums came with a bit of a trade-off. While the games got bigger, they lost that specific, intimate energy you can only get at a true HBCU Homecoming. Now, the rivalry is heading back to where it belongs. By bringing the game back to Greene Stadium, Howard is looking to restore that traditional feeling—packed tailgates, legendary band performances, and that specific vibe of thousands of alumni reconnecting on the Yard.
