Jaylen Brown Considers Lawsuit Over Beverly Hills Event Shutdown

The Celtics star says he and his sponsors wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars because police crashed his panel discussion.

Boston and Los Angeles have long had basketball beef, but the latest West Coast drama involving one of the Green and White’s biggest stars has nothing to do with the Lakers.

Celtics forward Jaylen Brown, a player who throughout his career has emphasized off-court business ventures and community empowerment, told ESPN’s Andscape that Beverly Hills police embarrassed him and sponsors when they showed up to shut down an event he was having in the enclave over NBA All-Star Weekend.

Brown was hosting an event for his 741 Performance footwear and apparel brand on Feb. 14 at a residence on Trousdale Place in Beverly Hills when police showed up around 7 p.m. and shut the event down. In video footage Brown posted, cops on the scene told him the event was being shut down because it wasn’t properly permitted, which Brown disputed.

But the department didn’t stand by its original story. On Feb. 19, it issued a statement apologizing to Brown for giving incorrect information to the public about why the party was shut down, but notably, not for shutting down the party itself. “The city’s previous statement about the weekend event at the Trousdale home was inaccurate, and on behalf of the City, I would like to apologize to Jaylen Brown and the Jannard family,” read the statement attributed to Beverly Hills City Manager Nancy Hunt-Coffey.

In a social media post, Brown said that’s not good enough.

After the Celtics beat the Golden State Warriors in a road game on Thursday night, Brown told ESPN’s Marc Spears that he and his sponsors spent as much as $800,000 on the event, and that he hasn’t taken legal action off the table.

Back on the court, Brown is in the midst of possibly the best season of his career. He had a triple-double in Thursday night’s win over the Warriors and for the season, has career highs in points, rebounds, and assists per game.
