Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith Spare Over NBA Gambling Scandal
Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith got into a heated discussion after news broke about the federal probe into illegal sports betting which led to the arrest of Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.
Smith suggested that the allegations could stem from a gambling addiction which Barkley dismissed.
“You’re making me mad right here,” Barkley said.
“This ain’t got nothing to do with addiction,” Barkley continued. “These dudes are stupid. You can’t, under no circumstances, fix basketball games. Under no circumstances. I love to gamble.”
“Rozier makes $26 million. Him giving people information or taking himself out of games, how much is he going to benefit taking himself out of games to hit unders? He’s making $26 million,” Smith argued.
Smith pushed back, calling it “illogical” for Rozier to be trying to win $50K when he already makes so much money.
“The notion that guys are making all this money and giving information, stop that,” Barkley said. “That’s got nothing to do with addiction. It’s total stupidity on those twos parts.”
Shaquille O’Neal jumped in and said that Billups and Rozier should be ashamed of themselves for their alleged actions.
“You all know the rules, we all know the letter of the law, and it’s just unfortunate,” O’Neal said. “Innocent until proven guilty, but usually when the FBI has something, they have you.”
Rozier and Billups were arrested with more than 30 people in connection with two large gambling operations that federal prosecutors said were linked to organized crime families. The both were placed on immediate leave from their teams.
“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority," the league said in its statement.
