Coco Gauff Wins the Wuhan Open
Coco Gauff won four straight games to defeat Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 to win the Wuhan Open on Sunday.
To get to the finals, Gauff defeated Moyuka Uchijima in 51 minutes. She also beat Zhang Shuai in the third round and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals.
This is Gauff's second title this year, following her French Open win. In total, she now has 11 career titles. The match was also the first time the two friends met in a WTA final.
Gauff dominated the match, hitting 24 winners, 11 more than Pegula. During the trophy ceremony, Gauff thanked Pegula for supporting her early in her career.
âWhen I came on tour, you were one of the first people to be nice to me and welcome me with open arms,â Gauff said. âThat really went a long way, so I appreciate you. Itâs great to finally play in the final against you, and I hope for many more. So, congratulations and thank you.â
"Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don't know if I've done that before on a title run," Gauff continued after the match. "I just felt like I was really proud of what I accomplished this week, regardless of the result today."
Pegula spoke glowingly of her Gauff after the match.
"We've spent a lot of time together and, even though I'm a bit older, I always admire and respect her so much," Pegula said of Gauff. "She's just so mature for her age."
Because of Pegulaâs track record, Gauff did not want to go the distance.
âYouâre the three-set queen,â she said to Pegula. âSo, I was determined not to let you get there today, because it felt like the odds would be in your favor in the third set.â
