Arike Ogunbowale Faces Battery Charge After Allegedly Punching Security Guard

Things went south at a Miami nightclub hours after winning Unrivaled championship.

Just hours after hoisting a championship trophy, WNBA superstar Arike Ogunbowale was taken into custody by Miami police following an alleged physical altercation at a local hotspot.

Ogunbowale, 29, was arrested at E11EVEN nightclub at approximately 4:20 a.m. Thursday and charged with one count of first-degree misdemeanor battery. According to police reports, the incident unfolded as security was clearing a "large crowd" from the venue following an unrelated disturbance.

A security guard at the scene told officers he was attempting to escort Ogunbowale out of the building when the four-time WNBA All-Star allegedly punched him in the face with a closed fist. The force of the blow reportedly caused the staff member to fall to the ground. Officers noted the altercation was captured on the nightclub’s internal security footage, and Ogunbowale was taken into custody without further incident.

The arrest follows what should have been a night of pure triumph for the veteran scorer. On Wednesday night, Ogunbowale delivered a signature 19-point performance to lead her team, Mist, to a victory over Phantom in the Unrivaled season two championship. The team had reportedly headed to the club to celebrate the league title.

In a statement obtained by The New York Post, an Unrivaled spokesperson confirmed the league is monitoring the situation.

“The league is aware of an incident involving Arike Ogunbowale and we are in the process of gathering additional information,” the spokesperson told The Post, noting that the athlete is currently “home safely.”

The Dallas Wings also said they are gathering more details and will provide further comments as the situation evolves. Ogunbowale, who led the WNBA in scoring in 2020 and is a two-time All-Star Game MVP, was released on $1,000 bond.

A central figure in the rise of women’s basketball, Ogunbowale first captured national attention at Notre Dame, where she hit back-to-back buzzer-beaters to win the 2018 NCAA championship.
