Deja Vu: Arike Ogunbowale’s Game-Winner Echoes 2018 National Title Heroics

The star-studded Barclays Center Crowd, including Carmelo Anthony and Issa Rae, witnessed Mist's dramatic semifinals victory.

Some things in basketball simply never change, and Arike Ogunbowale operating with ice in her veins as the clock winds down is at the top of the list. In a scene that felt like a nod to her legendary collegiate highlights, Ogunbowale drained a contested three-pointer to seal a 73-69 victory for Mist over Breeze on Monday night. The win guarantees Mist a spot in the Unrivaled Championship game this Wednesday.

If the sequence felt familiar, it is because the world has seen this film before. Back in 2018, while starring for Notre Dame, Ogunbowale authored perhaps the greatest individual "clutch" stretch in the history of the NCAA tournament. It began in the Final Four when she knocked out UConn with a last-second jumper in overtime. She followed that up in the national title game against Mississippi State, hitting a fading 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds remaining to capture the championship.

Fast forward to the semifinals at a sold-out Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the stakes felt just as high. Mist found themselves in a deep hole early, trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half. However, the resilient squad clawed back, setting the stage for Ogunbowale to do what she does best. With the game on the line, she stepped into a long-distance triple that silenced the Breeze bench and sent the 18,261 fans into a frenzy.

The star-studded crowd reflected the gravity of the moment. NBA legend Carmelo Anthony and UConn star Azzi Fudd watched from courtside, joined by a gallery of icons including Sabrina Ionescu, Issa Rae, Wanda Sykes, and Sue Bird. Even investors like Alex Morgan and Hollywood mainstays like Ashton Kutcher and Jason Sudeikis were on hand to witness the drama.

With this victory, Mist moves on to face the top-seeded Phantom on Wednesday at Sephora Arena in Miami. While a $600,000 prize pool is on the line, the momentum belongs to Ogunbowale, who proved once again that when the lights are brightest, she is the most dangerous player on the floor.
