Terry Rozier Remains Under Federal Investigation in Gambling Probe

Despite earlier reports of clearance, Rozier remains entangled in a federal investigation concerning a potential gambling scheme.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is still the subject of an alleged gambling scandal.

According to a report from veteran NBA insider Chris Haynes, Rozier is under federal investigation in a gambling probe and has not been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Haynes’ report comes two weeks after ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Rozier had been cleared "as of right now" by the NBA.

On June 30, Charania reported that the investigation came to an end during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Terry Rozier, as of right now, has been cleared," Charania told McAfee. “He finished the season with Miami. There's really nothing active as of right now with him. NBA spokesman Mike Bass did give a statement to me yesterday. He said the league is cooperating with federal prosecutors. This is a federal matter now. "

The game in question took place on March 23, 2023, when the Charlotte Hornets, who Rozier played for at the time, lost to the New Orleans Pelicans 115-96. Although it seemed like an insignificant game, it was eventually flagged by the league front office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York due to “the alarming number of under bets taken on Rozier’s individual statistical lines.”

For the season, Rozier averaged 21.1 PPG, 5.1 APG, and 4.1 RPG, but only five points, four rebounds, and two assists. He left the game with a sore foot injury in the first quarter. It was also Rozier’s last game of the season.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the alleged gambling ring conspired with former NBA player Jontay Porter to place large wagers against Rozier during that game. Porter was banned for life from the NBA after an investigation found Porter guilty of "disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games."

In 64 games for the Heat last season, Rozier scored 10.6 points and added 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 39.1% shooting. Rozier is entering the final season of his contract with the Heat, which will pay him $26.6 million.
