They Said She Couldn't Shoot: Angel Reese Hits 1,000 Career Points

The star playmaker is averaging a double-double while rewriting the history books in just her third professional season.

Angel Reese is making history look easy, and she just checked off another impressive achievement on Tuesday night. During the Atlanta Dream’s 91-75 victory over the Connecticut Sun, Reese needed six points to hit 1,000 for her professional career. She got it done late in the third quarter, and she did it from deep, knocking down a corner three with about a minute left in the period. That basket pulled the Dream within one point and completely changed the game's rhythm. Atlanta went on a tear in the fourth quarter, holding the Sun to just 10 points while putting up 26 of their own to secure their sixth win of the season.

After the game, Allisha Gray talked about how much work the forward has been putting into expanding her range. Gray mentioned that she sees Reese working on that 3-point shot every single day, so seeing her step up and knock it down with confidence was huge for the team. It was exactly the type of bucket Atlanta needed to spark their final run.

Reese finished the night with 12 points and 13 rebounds, locking in her fifth double-double in just eight games this year. Dream head coach Karl Smesko was thrilled about the shot too, noting that her release looked exactly like what they have been focusing on during practice sessions. Smesko has emphasized perimeter shooting development for Reese, and Tuesday night gave fans a glimpse of what that progress looks like in game situations.

What is wild is that she is doing all of this while entering just her third season in the WNBA. This 1,000-point mark comes right after she became the fastest player in league history to hit 900 career rebounds, reaching that stat in only 71 games during a win against the Portland Fire. Right now, Reese is second in the league in total rebounds and leads everyone on the offensive glass with more than five per game. With Atlanta at 6-2, Reese is showing that her game continues to expand while helping her team win.
