The promising trajectory of Sherrone Moore’s coaching career at the University of Michigan met an abrupt and scandalous end this week. After being fired by the university for misconduct, the former head football coach was subsequently detained by law enforcement on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, capping a dramatic period of upheaval in Ann Arbor.

Moore, 39, was dismissed "with cause" after a university investigation determined he violated institution policy. Athletic Director Warde Manuel confirmed the decision stemmed from the discovery of "credible evidence" that Moore "engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member." Manuel underscored the seriousness of the situation, stating such actions constituted a "clear violation of University policy" that necessitates immediate termination. 

The firing comes despite Moore having led the Wolverines to a 9-3 finish and earning a berth in the Citrus Bowl, where they are scheduled to play the Texas Longhorns. Moore's elevation to the head coaching role followed the departure of Jim Harbaugh to the NFL, building upon his success as the offensive coordinator during the team’s recent championship run. However, his tenure was overshadowed by the fallout from previous NCAA violations, for which he had served game suspensions and was anticipating further disciplinary action.

The immediate aftermath of the firing introduced a new dimension of crisis. Hours after the university’s announcement, the Saline Police Department reported that it assisted in the detention of Moore, transferring him to the Pittsfield Township Police Department. Pittsfield authorities confirmed they were conducting an investigation into an “alleged assault.” 

Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect was taken into custody and lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail, where he is awaiting a review of potential charges by the county prosecutor. The Pittsfield Police Department was careful to specify that the incident was not random and posed "no ongoing threat to the community." Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations and the need to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation, police officials declined to release further specific details regarding the incident.
