Kyler Murray Pens Emotional Farewell To Arizona

Following months of speculation, the Cardinals move on from their franchise QB.

The Arizona Cardinals  plan to release quarterback Kyler Murray at the start of the new league year on March 11, ending a seven-season tenure defined by record-breaking dual-threat production and persistent injury struggles. The team informed the former No. 1 overall pick of the decision on Monday, though a release will only occur if a trade is not reached by the 4 p.m. ET deadline next Wednesday.

Murray posted an emotional message on social media to the Arizona community, expressing regret for not leading the franchise to its first championship in more than seven decades.

"I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us," Murray wrote. "I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it."

The 28-year-old’s time in Arizona began with high expectations after he was selected first overall in 2019 following a Heisman Trophy-winning career at Oklahoma. He earned AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and was named to two Pro Bowls during his stint. Murray joins Josh Allen and Cam Newton as the only players in NFL history to throw for over 20,000 yards and rush for over 3,000 yards in their careers.

However, health became a major obstacle. Murray missed 30 games due to various ailments, including a torn ACL in 2022 and a foot injury that sidelined him for the final 12 games of last season. He finished his Cardinals career with 20,460 passing yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions, alongside 32 rushing touchdowns. Despite the individual statistics, the team went 38-48-1 in his 87 starts and made only one postseason appearance, a 34-11 Wild Card loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.

The move carries significant financial implications. The Cardinals already owe Murray $36.8 million in guaranteed money for 2026. By releasing him before March 16, the organization avoids triggering an additional $19.5 million in guarantees for the 2027 season.

As new head coach Mike LaFleur takes over, the Cardinals hold the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft, providing a clear path to select a replacement. For Murray, a source indicated he preferred to be released and has identified two specific teams he would like to join in free agency.
