Former Virginia Union Standout William Davis Dead At 22
The college football community is mourning the loss of defensive back William Davis, who died suddenly on Monday morning at 22 years old.
Sam Houston State University officials and head coach Phil Longo confirmed the passing of the student-athlete, who had recently transferred to the program to finish his collegiate career.
Before moving to Texas, Davis was a premier defensive playmaker at Virginia Union University, a historically Black university in Richmond, Virginia. He spent three seasons with the Panthers from 2022 through 2024, becoming a foundational piece of a highly successful defensive unit. During his tenure at Virginia Union, Davis appeared in 29 games, anchoring a secondary that helped lift the Panthers to consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game appearances.
His breakout performance came during his final year with the Panthers, where his ability to shut down opposing wide receivers earned him widespread recognition across the conference. Beyond his contributions on the field, Davis was a leader on campus and dedicated to his studies, graduating from Virginia Union with a degree in business management before entering the transfer portal.
Davis spent a brief period at West Virginia University before officially committing to Sam Houston State earlier this year. He moved to Huntsville, Texas, and joined the Bearkats on the field for spring workouts this past April. After choosing Sam Houston State, Davis shared how welcoming the campus felt, noting that the program immediately felt like home and provided the strong community environment he was looking for, far away from his home state of Virginia.
In a statement released by the university, Longo expressed the deep grief felt by the entire football program. He described Davis as an upbeat, positive, and passionate young man who left a lasting impression on his coaches and teammates in his short time with the team.
The Sam Houston State athletic department announced plans to honor Davis with a special tribute during the upcoming 2026 football season. University officials indicated that specific details regarding how the team will honor his memory will be shared at a later date.
A cause of death has not been released by officials.
