Welcome Back, Snipers: NBA’s ‘Shooting Stars’ Contest Returns To All-Star Weekend

It’s been more than a decade since the league showcased its best shooters like this.

NBA All-Star Weekend is usually about the high-flyers and the deep-range snipers, but this year, the league is reaching into its bag of nostalgia to bring back a classic. For the first time since 2015, the Shooting Stars competition is returning to the Saturday night lineup, replacing the Skills Challenge to give fans a mix of current stars and legendary icons like Ron Harper Sr. and Allan Houston.

When the Shooting Stars event takes the floor on Feb. 14, fans will see a unique format that leans heavily on chemistry. Four teams, each consisting of two active NBA players and one retired legend, will battle through a timed course of seven shooting locations. The pressure is on with a 70-second clock per round, culminating in a "Swing Shot" from long range that can make or break a team's score. The event is designed to be fast-paced, ensuring that every second and every rotation matters as teams move from the paint to the perimeter.

One of the most anticipated storylines of the night is Team Harper. Five-time NBA champion Ron Harper Sr. is making it a family affair, suiting up alongside his sons, third-year Boston Celtics guard Ron Harper Jr. and San Antonio Spurs rookie Dylan Harper. While the brothers have yet to face off in an official NBA game, this weekend offers a rare chance for the trio to share the court. This specific team dynamic brings a level of personal stakes to the competition that fans rarely get to see during the high-intensity regular season.

The competition is rounded out by three other squads: Team Knicks, featuring New York teammates Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns alongside franchise legend and executive Allan Houston, Team Cameron pays homage to Duke University, with Atlanta Hawks star Jalen Johnson, Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel and  fellow Blue Devil alum Corey Maggette, and Team All-Star which pairs two of the league’s most versatile young bigs, Toronto Raptors standout Scottie Barnes and Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren, with one of the greatest mid-range shooters in history, Richard Hamilton.
