NBPA Appeals NBA's Decision to Dock Terry Rozier’s Salary Amid Gambling Scandal
The NBA Players Association is intending to appeal the suspension of Terry Rozier who was placed on unpaid leave for his alleged involvement in a gambling scandal.
According to CBS Sports, NBPA argued that the league’s decision violates the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
"While we are in agreement with the league that upholding the integrity of the game is of the utmost importance, their decision to place Terry on leave without pay is counter to the presumption of innocence and inconsistent with the terms of our Collective Bargaining Agreement," the NBPA statement says. "We plan to challenge their decision via the proper channels."
According to the NBA, the decision was made to protect the Heat, by putting the money in escrow it ensures that the funds return to Heat if Rozier is found guilty. The league also stated that Rozier would recieve his entire salary if he is found innocent.
The final decision will be made by an arbiter, “who will need to determine if the NBA's plan to have Rozier's pay put in escrow is within the boundaries of the CBA. “
Rozier was arrested on federal charges related to a gambling scheme, facing allegations of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Federal investigators allege that Rozier conspired with associates to profit from prop bets based on his statistical performance in a March 2023 game while he was with the Charlotte Hornets. Prosecutors claim Rozier informed a friend that he would leave the game early with an injury, allowing bettors to place wagers on him finishing "under" his expected statistical totals.
Rozier, through his attorney, has vehemently denied the allegations.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones were also arrested for their alleged roles in separate gambling schemes.
