Michael Porter Jr. Says He Made Ex-Girlfriend Pay 50 Percent of Rent

Although he signed a $200M contract, Porter insisted on splitting rent to keep his ex's intentions pure.

Since he arrived in New York, Michael Porter Jr. has been sharing his thoughts on numerous topics. For his latest talk, Porter spoke about his standard of handling living expenses in relationships.

Appearing on the latest episode of Respectfully The Justin Laboy Show, the Brooklyn Nets forward says he split rent with his ex-girlfriend because he wanted to make sure she had the right intention."

“Hold on. I know you're not worth $200 million and was splitting rent with your ex-girlfriend,” Laboy asked.

"It's very hard when you have money to tell a woman's intentions," Porter explained.

"I had never bought a girl expensive gifts before this last girl — and it was cool to do,” he said. “But I still wanted to know that she was with me for the right reasons. Every dude in this particular person's past had money. So I never wanted to feel like a girl was just with me because of what I have."

Since their breakup, Porter said that she's been "asking for the bread.”

Porter then shared a story about his ex-girlfriend finding a new apartment that was double her price range.

Because he wanted her to stay there, Porter offered to pay the difference after she paid whatever she could.

Ported then agreed that he would cover the rent for a year, even if they broke up. After the relationship ended  “five or six months later” and he asked himself, “Do I keep helping her out or is it cooked?"

“I don't blame her because she went into that apartment not being able to afford it, and I gave her my word,” he said.

“So, why you just don't send her half for the rest of the year?” Laboy asked

“Because she needs to act right month to month,” Porter replied. “I'm just saying. So, if I'm paying the remaining months… and I see she's wilding. Like, bro, it's going to be hard to continue that agreement. That's going to be tough because if you're out here wilding, get that next dude to pay that rent.”

In the summer, Porter was traded from the Denver Nuggets to the Nets and has been sharing his insight on several platforms about gambling, as sports gambling (His Johntay brother was banned from the NBA for betting on games), women, the WNBA, and even homosexuality. Recently, his controversial statements have caught the attention of the Nets front office.

Sean Marks, General Manager of the Nets, took some time to address his new star’s remarks on NBA Media Day.

Those conversations will remain internal. I think this is a new environment for him. A new market, new expectations, new roles, both on the court and in the locker room,” Marks said at Tuesday’s press conference. “He knows where the organization stands on certain issues and topics…this market is a little different than where he was.”
