Michael Porter Jr. Warns of Growing Sports Betting Impact

The former NBA champion detailed how the influence of gambling has created a toxic environment for players and fans.

Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. believes that gambling will continue to have a negative impact on sports.

During an appearance on the One Night with Steiny podcast, Porter spoke candidly about the new reality in sport with legalized gambling.

"The enjoyment of the game isn't for the game anymore," Porter said. "It's so that people can make money. In reality, way more people are losing money than making money."

The accessibility of betting by players and fans has created a “toxic environment” in sports Porter argued.

"Think about it, if you could get all your homies rich by telling them, 'Yo, bet $10,000 on my under this one game. I'm going to act like I've got an injury, and I'm going sit out. I'm going to come out after three minutes,'" Porter said. "And they all get a little bag because you did it one game.”

"That is so not OK," he added, "but some people probably think like that. They come from nothing, and all their homies have nothing."

Because of the the pressure of high stakes sports gambling, Porter shared that players are often targeted by fans

"We really do get death threats," Porter said.

To rein in some of the issues, Porter said that sports betting should be restricted to in-person only in Las Vegas and not online

"The whole sports gambling entity ... it's bad and it's only going to get worse," he said.

Porter has first hand experience of the destructive impact of gambling. Jontay Porter, his brother who used to play for the Toronto Raptors was banned from the NBA for gambling in 2022 after pleading guilty to manipulating his performance to help bettors profit on "under" wagers tied to his stats.

“Everybody has different things that they struggle with. That can go from people that struggle with alcohol, people that struggle with drugs," Porter said on his "Curious Mike" YouTube channel. "My brother, for example, struggled with gambling.”

Currently, Terry Rozier and Malik Beasley are under federal investigations for their alleged involvement in gambling schemes.
