Reflecting On The Moment Simone Biles Became The Most Decorated Gymnast of All Time

Celebrating Black History Month with a look back at how Biles earned her 38th major medal.

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team reclaimed its position at the top of the Olympic podium during the 2024 Paris Games, securing a gold medal that solidified a historic milestone for its veteran leader. Following a silver medal finish at the Tokyo 2020 Games, the American squad, led by Simone Biles, finished with a score of 171.296 to beat out Italy and Brazil. With that victory, Biles became the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast in history. By earning her eighth Olympic medal at the time, she moved past Shannon Miller, who previously held the record with seven.

The gold medal win in the team final marked the fourth time an American women's gymnastics team had taken the top spot. Biles was joined on the roster by Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera. Biles competed in every event during the final, highlighted by her signature Yurchenko double pike on the vault, a move often referred to as the Biles II. The win brought Biles to a career total of 38 medals across Olympic and World Championship competitions, making her the most decorated gymnast of all time, male or female.

Individually, Biles posted a 14.900 on the vault, a 14.366 on the balance beam, and a 14.666 on the floor exercise. At 27, she also set a record as the oldest American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics. The victory provided a significant gap between the U.S. and the rest of the field, as Italy took the silver with a 165.494—their first team medal in 96 years—and Brazil secured the bronze with a 164.497, marking the first Olympic team medal in that nation's history.

The achievement marked a triumphant return to the top for the program, which had not won team gold since the Rio 2016 Games. For Biles, the moment was a milestone in a career defined by resilience and unparalleled athletic dominance.
