Not So Fast, New York: Wembanyama Slams The Brakes On Knicks’ Streak

Victor Wembanyama dominated the paint with 32 points to help San Antonio steal a critical road victory and hand New York its first loss of the postseason.

The New York Knicks finally dropped a game in these playoffs, and it came at a moment when the San Antonio Spurs absolutely needed a win.

Facing a potential 3-0 hole that no team in NBA history has ever climbed out of, the Spurs locked in on Monday night. Behind a spectacular performance from Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio secured an 115-111 victory at Madison Square Garden, snapping New York’s incredible 13-game postseason winning streak that had kept the city buzzing for over a month.

Even with the loss, the Knicks still hold a 2-1 lead in the series with Game 4 coming up on Wednesday. Monday's matchup was a reminder of how tough this series is going to be, marking the first time the Garden has hosted a finals game since 1999 as New York chases its first title since 1973.

Wembanyama put together his most efficient game of the series so far, shooting 11-for-18 from the floor to finish with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks. The Spurs also got a massive lift from the young guys. Guard Stephon Castle stepped up with 23 points, including some incredibly clutch free throws at the end, while Dylan Harper provided a spark off the bench with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Knicks got plenty of offense from their usual stars. Jalen Brunson led the way with 32 points, and OG Anunoby was right behind him with 28. Jordan Clarkson, who didn't play a single minute in Game 2, gave New York 10 points off the bench. However, Karl-Anthony Towns had a tough time building on his big Game 2 performance, finishing with just 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting.

San Antonio jumped out early, taking a 33-22 lead after the first quarter and stretching it to 12 in the first half. But you knew the Knicks would make a run. Anunoby scored 11 points in the second quarter, and Brunson added 10, fueling a huge comeback that put New York ahead 64-57 at halftime. The Knicks completely controlled the minutes when Anunoby was on the floor in that second frame, outscoring the Spurs by 21, highlighted by a play where he beat Wembanyama off the dribble for a dunk.

A major storyline to watch was Brunson picking up his fourth foul with over four minutes left in the period, which limited how aggressive he could be.

In the fourth quarter, free throws turned out to be the ultimate equalizer for San Antonio. The Spurs got into the bonus with 9:18 left, meaning any defensive mistake by New York sent them to the line. That made it incredibly risky for the Knicks to play physical defense inside.

When Towns pulled Wembanyama's arm during a rebound attempt, the Spurs center immediately asked for a review. Those free throws kept the Spurs afloat while New York was hitting from deep. San Antonio's defense really connected late, executing great rotations to keep the Knicks from stringing together stops, while Wembanyama completely anchored the paint in the final minutes.

Turnovers were ultimately what doomed the Knicks. New York coughed it up 13 times, which San Antonio turned into 21 points. On the flip side, the Spurs took great care of the ball, turning it over just eight times for seven New York points. The Knicks gave away too many live-ball turnovers, allowing a fast San Antonio team to get out in transition and build an advantage.

The Knicks kept fighting until the final buzzer, with Brunson hitting a 3-pointer in the final minute and Anunoby knocking down another from the corner, but the Spurs held their composure to close it out.
