‘NBA On Prime’ Is a Game-Changer On the Sports Landscape

Amazon Prime Video's debut brings the NBA into the digital-first era.

The arrival of the NBA on Prime marks a watershed moment for the league and digital media, officially ushering the league into the streaming-first era. Following a landmark, 11-year, media rights deal, Amazon's inaugural broadcast is more than just another new viewing option, but it aims to redefine the fan experience. With a futuristic all-LED studio, an all-star analyst team featuring legends like Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Udonis Haslem, and several innovations ranging from customizable Multiview to AI-powered highlights, Prime Video is betting that a new generation of viewers of hoop fans is ready for the future of the sport.

BET.com was on hand for a media session with some members of the “NBA on Prime” team.

After watching the NFL on Prime Video, Griffin was intrigued to be a part of the team the streaming giant was building to showcase the NBA.

“I think the opportunity to sort of be a part of something new, and Amazon taking a step into the NBA was really interesting to me, sort of watching Thursday Night Football and how they tackled that whole process was very impressive and now you see what they've done with Thursday nights and that they've made it a huge thing,” Griffin said. “This is no different. They've taken the same approach. I was just getting a chance to be on the panel. Being with UD, Dirk, Steve, and Taylor Rooks is unbelievable. So I'm excited.”

Haslem spoke about speaking truth on the platform and how Prime is allowing the team to be themselves.

“I can say personally that I've never been a person to shy away from anything, and I think that the reason why Amazon wants us is because of who we are and our authentic personalities. But I think when it comes to certain situations, you don't have all the facts, you can't speak on certain things,” said Haslem. “So we're not just gonna go out and just jump on the edge and try to be the first one to try to break a story or speak on something that we have no facts on. I think all of us have been guys who have not been afraid to speak on the things that we believe in.”

Along with his role as an analyst, Nash shared his excitement about being named a senior advisor with the Phoenix Suns.

“I'm excited. It's great to be back with the organization and be a resource to everyone there. Fortunately, there's enough time to do both jobs, and to enjoy them both, and to max out on both of them,” Nash explained. “So overall, I'm just really excited to be in the game and be able to watch, analyze, collaborate with great people and great minds, and get to do that both at Prime and with the Suns.”

Nowitzki spoke about Prime’s state-of-the-art studio, which will allow analysts to take fans deeper into the game with their insights.

“I think we got obviously super cool features also in the studio with the court and with the iPad, we're able to draw some stuff up, like, what does a vertical space mean, and how does Luka use it? And I think there's just so many cool things we can mention, and some fans might know, some fans might not, but we're trying to grow the game and educate, and talk about the game,” Nowitzki said. “So I think we got a lot of cool features and a lot of bright minds, and I think it's gonna be great.”

The inaugural season of NBA on Prime Video premieres on Friday, October 24. Their first night of coverage will feature an opening-week doubleheader featuring the Boston Celtics against the  New York Knicks at 7:30 ET. The Minnesota Timberwolves take on the Los Angeles Lakers at 10:00 ET.
