Tuskegee Basketball Coach Sues Morehouse After Viral Postgame Arrest
A high-stakes legal battle is brewing between two of the most storied institutions in HBCU sports. Benjy Taylor, the head men’s basketball coach at Tuskegee University, has filed a lawsuit against Morehouse College and two of its campus police officers. The filing stems from a January 31 incident where Taylor was handcuffed and escorted off the court in Atlanta following a game against the Maroon Tigers, a moment that quickly went viral and sparked national outrage.
The lawsuit, which targets Morehouse and officers identified as R. Clark and M. Roberson, will be formally announced during a press conference in College Park, Georgia, on Friday at 11 a.m. Taylor will be joined by his legal team, which includes civil rights attorneys Harry Daniels, John Burris, Gerald Griggs, and Gregory Reynald Williams.
The confrontation centered on a breakdown in postgame security protocols. According to reports and statements from Tuskegee athletic director Reginald Ruffin, members of the Morehouse football team entered the handshake line, which is strictly reserved for the competing basketball teams. Taylor reportedly stepped in to ask security and police to enforce conference rules and remove the football players to prevent a potential physical altercation.
Instead of clearing the court, officers on the scene determined Taylor’s actions were aggressive. The veteran coach was placed in handcuffs and led away in front of his players, his family, and a gym full of fans. He was eventually released without being charged with a crime.
