Cam Newton Checks UFC Fighter For 'Tasteless' Michelle Obama Comment
Former NFL MVP Cam Newton isn't holding back when it comes to UFC heavyweight Josh Hokit and his recent post-fight comments about former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Sitting down on his "4th & 1" podcast, Newton addressed the viral remarks Hokit made right after his knockout win over Derrick Lewis at UFC Freedom 250, which took place on the South Lawn of the White House. For Newton, the fighter crossed a line that simply shouldn't be crossed.
Newton made it clear that the Obama family is widely respected for their service to the country, meaning the former first lady and her daughters should be completely off-limits. He pointed out that Michelle Obama was just an innocent bystander who had no business being dragged into a post-fight interview.
The former Carolina Panthers quarterback questioned what Hokit was thinking and warned him to be much more mindful of who he targets in public. Newton also highlighted how even veteran commentator Joe Rogan seemed taken aback by the moment, calling the fighter's jab tasteless and a clear case of doing too much.
Newton isn't the only major sports figure pushing back. UFC CEO Dana White quickly put distance between the promotion and the fighter by publicly condemning the remarks. Former two-division champion Daniel Cormier labeled the comments nasty, while ESPN's Stephen A. Smith called the situation inexcusable, noting that the controversy completely overshadowed a historic night of fights.
