The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that NBA star Brandon Clarke was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday. While the agency noted Tuesday that his body is ready to be released, the official cause of death has been deferred pending further testing.

According to reports from NBC4 in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call at a home in the San Fernando Valley. Authorities are reportedly investigating the death as a possible overdose after drug paraphernalia was allegedly discovered at the scene.

The tragedy occurred as Clarke faced significant legal challenges in Arkansas. Court records obtained by TMZ indicate that the veteran forward was facing felony charges, including trafficking a controlled substance and fleeing in a vehicle. The drug charges reportedly stemmed from an April traffic stop where authorities discovered illegal narcotics, including the painkiller Kratom. Clarke had been due in court this week to address those allegations.

The Grizzlies organization expressed its devastation in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke," the team stated. "Brandon Clarke was an outstanding teammate and even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Clarke spent his entire seven-year career in Memphis after being selected No. 21 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. A standout at Gonzaga University, he became a reliable fixture in the Grizzlies' rotation. However, his recent seasons were hampered by health issues. He suffered a season-ending Grade 2 calf strain in December 2025 during a matchup against the Washington Wizards. In late March, the team updated his status, noting that while he was progressing, he had not yet been cleared for high-intensity basketball activities.

His agency, Priority Sports, remembered him as a gentle soul who maintained deep connections from his time at San Jose State and Gonzaga through his professional tenure.

"Everyone loved BC because he was always there as the most supportive friend you could ever imagine," the agency said in a statement. "He was so unique in the joy he brought to all of those in his life."

Clarke is survived by his mother, Whitney, and an extended circle of family and teammates.
