Judge Rules in Favor of Ja Morant in Lawsuit Against Local Wing Chain
A Memphis chicken chain is going to have to fry up a lot of wings to cover the over $300,000 they just lost in a lawsuit filed by the NBA All-Star point guard Ja Morant.
According to Fox 13 Memphis, a Shelby County Chancery Court has ordered The Wing Guru to pay Morant more than $300,000 in damages and interest after he filed a lawsuit against them for breach of contract.
Per the suit, Morant originally signed a NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deal to be the spokesperson for the business “some years ago.” Eventually, he alleged the company continued to use his image in promotions but stopped paying them. Morant’s attorney stated in the suit that “the restaurant publicly promised on Instagram to send $75,000, which it acknowledged was owed,” but Morant was never paid.
In arbitration, the arbitrator sided with Morant, and The Wing Guru had refrained from using his likeness and was ordered to pay $300,000. Morant was also awarded about $65,000 in interest and legal costs by the arbitrator.
Additionally, the chancery court sided with Mortant, his legal team, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, and the Tennessee Secretary of State's office, who “all attempted to serve the business summons without success for months." Because the restaurant never responded, Morant's won a default judgment from the court.
Outside of his legal victory, Morant recently unveiled his latest, highly anticipated Nike signature, the Ja 3 "Max Volume," with a five-city tour. In promotion of the shoe, he traveled to New York, Tokyo, Beijing, and Manila, as well as the prestigious Peach Jam EYBL tournament in August in Augusta, GA.
The Ja 3 "Max Volume" is scheduled to be released on August 21, 2025.
