Bubba Wallace Makes NASCAR History With Win at the Brickyard
After a 100-race winless streak, Bubba Wallace made history with his win in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday (July 27). Wallace is now the first Black driver to win a race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was also his third NASCAR Cup Series win and his first since Kansas in 2022.
In the final round of green flag pit stops, Wallace maintained a sizable lead until a rainstorm shower brought out the caution and then the red flag with six laps to go in the race. In dramatic fashion, the stage was set for an overtime finish where Wallace held off Larson and the entire field while running out of gas.
"I'm wore out," Wallace said to TNT Sports after the race. "I thought about every which way to Sunday besides driving a race car under that red flag ... Just so proud of this team. That adrenaline rush is crazy, because I'm coming off that right now and I am wore out.”
"To overcome so much and to put these people here in Victory Lane, that's what it's about. It's about these people that continue to push me, believe in me, and just so proud."
“Welcome to Victory Lane, Becks," Wallace said. "That's pretty cool."
Larson came in second, Denny Hamlin in third, Ryan Preece in fourth, and Brad Keselowski made fifth place. Rounding out the top 10 was Todd Gilliland in sixth, Ryan Blaney seventh, Christopher Bell eighth, Alex Bowman ninth, and Carson Hocevar 10th.
Overcome with emotions, Wallace celebrated his historic victory with his wife, Amanda Carter, and their son, Becks.
"This one's really cool," Wallace said. "Coming off Turn 4, I knew I was going to get there -- unless we ran out of gas. I was surprised I wasn't crying like a little baby."
