Howard Football Head Coach Vacancy Created as Larry Scott Takes Auburn Job
Larry Scott, the head football coach who revitalized the program at Howard University, is relocating from Washington, D.C., to the Southeastern Conference (SEC), accepting the position of tight ends coach at Auburn University. The move marks a return to the highest level of college football for Scott, an experienced coach with a resume that bridges both HBCU leadership and Power Five positional expertise.
Howard Legacy: Two MEAC Titles
Scott's departure concludes a six-season tenure at the helm of the Howard Bison program, where he compiled a 23-37 record. While the overall win-loss total may not reflect the entire narrative, his impact on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) landscape was significant. Scott led the Bison to back-to-back MEAC championships in 2022 and 2023—the program's first conference titles since 1993. The 2023 championship earned Howard its first-ever appearance in the Cricket Celebration Bowl.
Beyond the banners, Scott’s time at "The Mecca" saw marked development in player recruitment and on-field performance. For example, during his final seasons, the Bison defense was nationally ranked, including a top-15 finish in one season. He also coached numerous All-MEAC selections, several of whom advanced to post-collegiate opportunities like the HBCU Legacy Bowl. Scott inherited a challenging rebuild in 2020 and oversaw tangible progress despite the resource constraints often faced by HBCU programs.
Return to the Power Five and Positional Expertise
The decision to join Auburn's staff under new head coach Alex Golesh brings Scott back to the conference level where he has spent much of his coaching career. This is not Scott's first stint coaching in the SEC, or even his first time coaching the tight ends position at an elite level.
- SEC Experience: He previously served as the tight ends coach at Florida (2018-2019) and was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee (2017)—becoming the first Black offensive coordinator in that program’s history.
- Positional Prowess: Scott’s reputation as a developer of tight ends is a key factor in the Auburn hire. During his time at Florida, he coached Kyle Pitts, who became the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history (4th overall in 2021). Scott was also the tight ends coach and interim head coach at Miami (2015), where he led the Hurricanes to a 4-2 finish and a bowl berth.
The move from a Division I head coach position to a Power Five assistant role is notable within the coaching profession. For Scott, it represents an opportunity to leverage his skill set—tight end development and elite recruiting—in the highly competitive SEC environment. For Auburn, the addition brings an experienced positional coach and former coordinator with a track record of player development at the highest level of the sport.
Scott, a Florida native and former USF player, has now cemented his dual-track career path, marked by successful head coaching at the HBCU level and significant assistant roles in the Power Five. His appointment adds another layer of intersection between the HBCU football world and the top tier of college football.
