NYC Crowd Had Zero Chill For Trump’s Historic Finals Appearance
The NBA Finals returned to Madison Square Garden for the first time in 27 years on Monday night, bringing heavy security restrictions, a historic presidential appearance, and a tough outcome for New York sports fans. Right before tipoff of Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, President Donald Trump heard it from his hometown crowd. A heavy chorus of boos rang out through the arena when his image appeared on the video board.
Trump, 79, is the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. Standing in a midcourt suite during the national anthem, Trump smirked as the crowd's jeers echoed through the arena, drawing a louder reaction than the one saved for the visiting Spurs. The president sat in the house as a guest of Knicks owner James Dolan, a longtime friend who has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Trump’s political campaigns.
The presidential visit created a logistical logjam outside, turning into a main talking point before the ball was even tipped. Secret Service measures required installing bulletproof glass around Trump's suite, halfway up the stands. For the 20,000 fans trying to get inside, the added security meant long entry lines, a strict no-bag policy, and the cancellation of outdoor watch parties around the Garden.
On the court, the night ended in disappointment for New York. The Spurs edged the Knicks 115-111, snapping a 13-game winning streak and handing New York its first postseason loss since April 23. Despite the tough outcome at home, the Knicks still hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven championship series, with Game 4 staying in New York.
