A'ja Wilson Spoils Angel Reese’s Atlanta Home Debut

Despite a tough afternoon with turnovers, the third-year forward embraced the challenge against the reigning champions.

If you missed Sunday's matchup between A'ja Wilson and Angel Reese, you missed a wild game. It came right down to the final seconds in front of a packed house, and the Las Vegas Aces barely survived, escaping with an 85-84 win over the Atlanta Dream.

Honestly, the Aces looked like they had this one completely wrapped up, but Atlanta went on a crazy 20-2 run in the fourth quarter to shock everyone and tie the game. It took an ice-cold game-winner from Chelsea Gray to save the day for Las Vegas and spoil the party in Atlanta.

This was Reese's big home debut, and she completely leaned into the moment. The Dream sold out State Farm Arena, and the forward turned heads before the game even started, showing up in an all-leather outfit. She didn’t back down from the matchup either, telling reporters pregame that while Wilson is obviously a great player, she knows she is a great player, too.

When it came to the actual game, the third-year forward had a bit of a rough afternoon against the reigning champs. Reese finished with nine points and eight rebounds, splitting those evenly between the offensive and defensive glass. The real issue was ball security, as she turned the ball over eight times, which was the most of anyone on the floor.

It has been a bit of a mixed bag for Reese through her first few games in Atlanta. She had a massive 16-rebound performance in a win against Dallas last week, but Sunday's turnover troubles showed she is still adjusting to her new squad.

On the other side, Wilson was doing what she always does. The Aces star put up 20 points, six rebounds, and two blocks in 31 minutes. To make the day even bigger, she actually passed her own head coach, Becky Hammon, for 19th place on the WNBA all-time scoring list.

With the win, Wilson and the Aces move to 4-1 and get to head back home to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. Meanwhile, Reese and the Dream take their first loss of the season and will try to bounce back on Friday when they host the Dallas Wings.
