LaMelo Ball Traded To Minnesota In Blockbuster Deal

The multi-player deal brings an elite playmaker to Minnesota to ease the offensive burden on All-NBA guard Anthony Edwards.

LaMelo Ball is packing his bags for the Twin Cities after a multi-player agreement between the Charlotte Hornets and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

According to a report from ESPN on Thursday morning, the Hornets have agreed to send the 24-year-old point guard along with wing Josh Green to Minnesota. In return, Charlotte will acquire big man Naz Reid, along with an extensive haul of future draft compensation. The draft assets heading to the Hornets include an unprotected 2033 first-round draft pick, three first-round pick swaps spanning 2028, 2029, and 2030, and three future second-round selections.

The transaction unites Ball with Minnesota guard Anthony Edwards, pairing the first and third overall picks from the 2020 NBA Draft class in the same backcourt. Edwards reportedly grew frustrated with constant defensive double-teams following the franchise's prior departure of Karl-Anthony Towns, prompting the front office to secure an elite playmaker to ease the offensive burden. Ball is coming off a productive season where he appeared in 72 games, averaging 20.1 points and 7.1 assists, helping Charlotte reach the play-in tournament before falling to the Orlando Magic.

While Minnesota secures a dynamic backcourt creator, the departure of Reid marks the end of an era for the Timberwolves. The 26-year-old center-forward spent seven seasons in Minnesota, developing from an undrafted free agent out of LSU into a cornerstone of the roster, highlighted by winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 2024. Reid averaged 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds this past season while playing through a shoulder injury.

For the Hornets, the move signals a transition toward a younger foundation centered around rising stars Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel. Charlotte general manager Jeff Peterson declined to comment on the parameters of the agreement during a Thursday press conference introducing the franchise's recent draft selections. According to league salary figures, the exchange will also generate a historic $40.8 million traded player exception for Charlotte.

The transaction is expected to be processed alongside a separate multi-team deal that recently sent Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets. Due to the league's standard offseason calendar, the trade cannot be formally finalized until the NBA moratorium is lifted on July 6.
