The Scoreboard: Michael Vick Wins Big, Derrick Henry Makes History, and Black QBs Dominate NFL Week 1
Former NFL superstar Michael Vick kicked off his head coaching career with the Norfolk State Spartans in electrifying fashion. Down 23–7 in the fourth quarter against Virginia State, the Spartans mounted a jaw-dropping rally — scoring three straight touchdowns to tie the game before nailing a 29-yard field goal to win.
Vick was rewarded with the game ball — and rightfully so. It’s not just a win for Norfolk, it’s a new chapter for one of the game’s most iconic dual-threat quarterbacks.
Derrick Henry Surpasses Jim Brown
Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry reminded the world why he’s one of the most dominant forces in football. During a matchup against the Buffalo Bills, Henry broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run — his 6th rushing TD of the season — which pushed him past the legendary Jim Brown for sixth-most rushing touchdowns in NFL history.
At 30 years old and still trucking defenders with ease, Henry continues to etch his name alongside the greats.
Travis Hunter’s Two-Way Brilliance
Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter didn’t just turn heads with his fresh cut — he made NFL history in his debut. Hunter became the only player in the last 20 seasons to record 5+ receptions and play 5+ defensive snaps in a single game. The two-way phenom is showing that versatility isn’t just for highlight reels — it wins games.
The Era of Black Quarterbacks Is Here
Last week’s Scoreboard noted the record-breaking 16 Black starting quarterbacks heading into Week 1. This week, we got the receipts.
Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts led the Philadelphia Eagles to a hard-fought win over the Dallas Cowboys, scoring two rushing touchdowns and extending his own NFL record — 16 career games with multiple rushing TDs as a QB. While a lightning delay temporarily paused the action, Hurts’ performance was all power and precision.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, returning from injury, put up a solid 188 yards, going 21-for-34. Meanwhile, Justin Fields looked sharp in his New York Jets debut, finishing with 218 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-22 passing.
As the season kicks off, it’s clear: the face of the league is shifting, and Black quarterbacks are not only in the conversation — they are the conversation.
