Atlanta Falcons’ James Pearce Jr. Officially Charged With 3 Felonies
Formal charges have been filed in Miami-Dade County against Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. following a February confrontation involving his former girlfriend, Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson. The 22-year-old defender is facing a total of four charges brought by the State Attorney on Thursday, including three felonies tied to an alleged high-speed pursuit and a physical altercation with law enforcement.
According to court documents obtained by ESPN, Pearce faces three felonies: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting an officer with violence. A fourth charge of felony aggravated stalking was downgraded to a misdemeanor, while a charge of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer was dropped.
The allegations paint a harrowing picture of a pursuit through Doral, Florida, on Feb. 7. Authorities allege that Pearce followed Jackson’s car and used his own vehicle to repeatedly ram into hers as she tried to reach a local police station. When a police officer attempted to intervene, Pearce allegedly took off, leading a high-speed chase that ended when he crashed at an intersection. Following the wreck, Pearce reportedly tried to run away on foot and resisted officers before they eventually took him into custody.
In the wake of the arrest, Jackson sought legal protection, filing for a protective order on Feb. 9. In her petition, the WNBA star stated she was in fear for her life and alleged a pattern of physical and verbal abuse. She detailed threats where Pearce reportedly claimed he would harm her or suffocate her with a bag. A judge granted the initial request for protection, and a hearing for a permanent injunction is set for April 21. For now, Pearce is ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from Jackson’s home and workplace.
