Naomi Osaka’s Sparkling Gold Dress Had Her Opponent Big Mad

German tennis player Laura Siegemund claimed that high-profile players get away with breaking time rules to show off their clothing choices.

Naomi Osaka knows exactly how to get people talking with her court style, but her latest outfit choices at the French Open are causing some serious friction with her opponents. Following their opening-round matchup Tuesday, German tennis player Laura Siegemund voiced her frustrations, claiming the elaborate outfit changes are crossing a line when it comes to tournament rules.

Osaka made quite an entrance on Court Suzanne Lenglen for her first match at Roland Garros. She walked out wearing a custom black pleated skirt and a beaded bodice, then removed the outer layer to reveal a glittering gold tennis dress. Osaka went on to win the match 6-3, 7-6, but the pre-match presentation left a sour taste in Siegemund's mouth.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Siegemund didn't hold back about the display, stating that she steps onto the court to play tennis rather than participate in a fashion show. While she noted that she doesn't care what other competitors choose to wear, she took major issue with how the tournament officials managed the clock.

According to Siegemund, officials typically monitor players down to the exact second from the moment they step out, tracking everything from unpacking their bags to grabbing a water bottle. She claimed Osaka was given roughly a minute and a half just to get out of her walk-on gear and prepare for the match.

Siegemund argued that the time rules should be applied exactly the same for every single person on the tour, expressing her belief that high-profile marquee names are treated differently by the umpires.

Osaka has regularly used her clothing as a creative outlet on the tour, previously drawing attention with a unique jellyfish-inspired design at the Australian Open. After the match on Tuesday, she explained that because she is naturally a quiet person, fashion gives her a way to speak without words.

She joked about the bright look, admitting she felt like the Eiffel Tower lit up at night. She even confessed she worried the reflective sequins might bother the chair umpire enough to get her sent off the court, noting she kept two traditional backup dresses in her bag just in case things went south.
