Deion Sanders Beats Cancer, Tells Doubters: 'I Got My Swagger Back'
Deion Sanders is feeling like himself again, and that is great news for the Colorado Buffaloes as they gear up for the football season. The Hall of Famer sat down for a candid chat about his health journey, making it clear that his signature confidence is fully back.
Appearing on “Good Morning America” with Michael Strahan, Sanders opened up about how tough things were just a year ago. He admitted that dealing with a cancer diagnosis left him in a spot where he really did not know what the future held.
Sanders underwent bladder removal and reconstruction surgery before sharing the news that he was cancer-free in July 2025. He also had to manage surgeries for blood clots later that fall and went through another follow-up procedure this past March.
With those tough days behind him, Sanders is locked in on his fourth season coaching in Boulder. When Strahan asked him what he is looking forward to the most this year, Sanders had a simple answer: winning. He noted that getting his body right has given him his joy and his focus back.
Colorado is looking to turn things around this autumn after a tough 3-9 finish last year in the Big 12. Sanders has a 16-21 overall record with the Buffaloes. He is also watching his family grow in the sport, as his son, Shedeur Sanders, is now suited up as a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
During the segment, Strahan reminded everyone of just how unique Sanders' athletic path is. He is still the only athlete to ever play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series, balancing a 14-year NFL career with nine years in Major League Baseball.
