Venus And Serena Are Running It Back At Wimbledon

Tournament organizers announced Tuesday that the duo accepted a surprise wild card invitation for the women's doubles draw.

Venus Williams and Serena Williams are locking in for another run on the grass courts of the All England Club. Wimbledon organizers announced Tuesday that the legendary sisters accepted a wild card invitation to compete in the women's doubles draw, with the tournament set to kick off in less than two weeks.

The news means tennis fans get to see a pairing that has completely owned the London grass over the years. Together, they have captured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and six of those came right at Wimbledon. Interestingly, this isn't their first time entering the tournament this way. Their very first two Wimbledon doubles titles, in 2000 and 2002, came through wild cards as well. They last won the doubles tournament here in 2016.

Serena Williams, 44, has been getting back into the swing of professional competition after nearly four years away from the game. Just last week, she picked up a doubles win at Queen's Club in London with partner Victoria Mboko before an injury to Mboko's knee cut their run short. Serena Williams is also lined up to play doubles with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Venus Williams, who celebrates her 46th birthday on Wednesday, has continued to play in tournaments sporadically.

We last saw the sisters share the doubles court at the 2022 U.S. Open, where they lost their opening-round match. Before that appearance, they hadn't played doubles together in four and a half years.

Sitting at six Wimbledon doubles trophies as a duo, they are currently tied for the tournament record with Suzanne Lenglen and Elizabeth Ryan, who set the mark back in the 1920s.

Their overall track record on the grass surface is tough to match. On top of their doubles success, Serena Williams has seven Wimbledon singles titles to her name, and Venus Williams has five. Serena Williams also took home a mixed doubles trophy with Max Mirnyi in 1998, plus two gold medals on the Wimbledon courts during the 2012 London Olympics—one in singles and one right alongside her sister.
